Impending Extinction Alert!!! – Meanest Moms and Gentlemen

He was a handsome guy. Very easy on the eyes and well-dressed. Nice and clean suit; I’m talking about the whole works!

I, seeing how cool and well put-together he was, idly wondered how this gem of a gentleman had come to be the way he was.

He looked almost perfect to me! He’d helped one lady with her chair when she was about to sit down and I’d watched him earlier as he calmed a young kid who had been tearing about the place, intent on destruction.
I didn’t mention that we were at a house party, did I?

I walked up to him; the stranger. I just had to know his secret. He was too good to be true and men like him didn’t walk by me every day! In fact, they were so rare; I was starting to believe they were extinct.

“Hello!” I greeted with a wide smile.
He returned my smile with a greeting and a smile of his own and I was charmed.
Long story short, I told him I’d been watching him for a while now.
Yeah, I’m like that; not shy or anything. Guess you can call me the say-it-as-you-see-it-kinda-girl. Lol.
Of course, he, to say the least, was shocked at my straightforwardness.

“Yep, I’ve been observing your- you know, the way you do things; your appearance and I have to wonder; what is it that made you the way you are? I think someone had a hand in making you this way! You couldn’t have just developed genius gentleman skills all by yourself!” my voice had risen now.
He smiled at me, still surprised though. I waited patiently for his answer. I wasn’t in a hurry. I was going to have my answer.
And no, I wasn’t flirting. I swear, I wasn’t! I was just curious. J

So he was quiet for a moment. He seemed to be weighing his answer. I could tell I’d thrown him a sort of curve-ball with that question.
Then, after about two minutes of careful weighing, he said,

“I guess you can say that it’s because I had to grow up with the meanest mother ever.”
My brows peaked. I was confused. Had I heard him right?

“Uh, pardon me?”

He smiled and said more fervently.

“You heard me right, lady. I grew up with the meanest mother ever”
OK. I had expected any answer but this. I’d thought to hear something along the lines of;

“Well, I attended this school were you had to have the best manners or sign out”
“My father trained me to be a gentleman and since he was, it wasn’t hard to follow suit”

This answer was nothing short of shocking.
I was about to open my mouth to ask him if he’d heard my question but he grinned and held up a hand to stall whatever I was about to blurt out, then he led me to a table. After pulling out a chair for me to sit, he sat down and crossed a feet over his knee.

When he was comfortable, he started talking.
Everything he said to me that day was a revelation of sorts.

“When I was little, I hated vegetables. I preferred candies, pastries and pizza. You know what kids love, right? My friends got to choose what they had for breakfast. I didn’t. Mom made me eat broccoli and spinach and then she’d pack fruits in my lunch box too! Occasionally, we got to eat turkey and other stuff like that but she forced me to eat healthy. Does any kid care about eating healthy? No!”

I gasped. Eew! I hate spinach…and broccoli!
That woman, ugh!
He smiled at my comical expression and continued.

“Growing up, I was the typical kid. I wanted to have lots of friends and play all day like my friends were allowed to. Mom said no, I had to stay at home and finish my homework first. Then she insisted on knowing all my friends. If they weren’t to her taste, she ticked them off my list.”

I had to laugh at that. “She ticked them off your list? Why, it’s called your list for a reason! You should be allowed to make friends with whoever you like, duh!”
OK, the ‘duh’ was silent.
He smiled and continued.

“I didn’t like it either! It sucked. I couldn’t have the coolest friends and all the great dudes at school sort of avoided me. I wasn’t mommy’s boy but I was as close to wimpy as they came.” He said with a straight face. I looked at the man lounging comfortably in his seat across me. ‘Wimpy’ wasn’t a word I would use to describe him by a thousand miles. He oozed self-confidence and assurance without being arrogant.

“Then to make things really worse, she made me kneel by my bed daily and say my prayers to God. Morning and night. I’d be feeling so groggy and all, but prayers had to be said!”
I didn’t know her and neither had I met her but I didn’t like his mother at all. A mother who makes a little child kneel to pray? That had to be sort of illegal, right? Bad mother, that.

He wasn’t done, apparently. He opened his mouth and went on.

“She made me return other kids’ stuff if I took them without asking. I’d tell her it belonged to my friend and that that was how we rolled but she’d yell and say that if I didn’t return that stuff immediately, I’d get such a spanking, I wouldn’t soon forget it. So, I had to learn to make do with my own things and nothing but my things. Lady, that wasn’t cool either.”
I felt for the man seated in front of me. A faraway look was in his eyes now as if remembering those days was torture for him. At least, I thought so.
At this point, I wanted to tell him to skip this part about his mother and just tell me how he’d become the man that he was today; an absolute gentleman.

But he didn’t look like he was even here with me again. That faraway look remained in his eyes and he continued.

“My very mean mother made life miserable for me, dear. She made me go to church on Sundays while my mates got to hang out at clubs and party the morning off. We had the occasional outing and family moments but it always seemed like more fun out there, somehow. Then she’d ensure that I never missed a day at school. That law of no kid-spanking? Nah, it didn’t work at our home. She’d spank me until my backside turned blue then I had to thank her for the spanking too. As for my sisters and female cousins and friends, I wasn’t allowed to raise my voice at them or hit them. Not even in jest. Mom said every woman was a queen even if I couldn’t see her crown.”

Hmmm…I sort of liked that ‘queen’ bit, but the spanking? My eyes bugged. “Di-did you ever report her to the police?” I stuttered.

He smiled now. “No dear. If I had, my other relatives would have gladly shown me why reporting to the police wasn’t the best idea. They happened to be meaner than mom.”

I groaned now. This was too much. He’d really had a bad time growing up.

“She’d make me attend dance lessons, learn how to knot a decent tie and then she made me wear those ties to formal outings.” He pointed at his throat and true, there was a perfectly knotted tie at his collar. His smile at me widened.
“See? She was that mean. Till now, I can’t knot a tie wrong, even if I’m sleeping! Then she’d make me clean my room. In an age where boys were rebellious, I couldn’t be. I just couldn’t. My room had to be spick and span and my socks and shirts had to be washed weekly and neatly folded as soon as I learnt how to operate the washing machine. My life was hard. The other kids had it so fine and so smooth and so free, I had it rickety, straight and well, not so free. I didn’t live a prisoner’s life but then again, I didn’t live free. Mom insisted on always knowing where I was. Imagine that. If I was out past curfew time, a grounding was waiting for me somewhere on the horizon. And if I was being sneaky, she always knew somehow. I used to think that that was creepy, though. Mom wasn’t my favorite person back then”

At his use of ‘back then’, my brows peaked again. “And now?”
He smiled a sorrowful smile. “She died last year. And her last words to me were, ‘I know I was the meanest mother, boy. But see how you turned out? I made a gentleman out of you and I’d do it all over again if I had to! Your mean mother loves you much, dear’ and she went to be with God.”

I frowned. “So, what you are saying to me now, is your mother-your mo-” I couldn’t even finish the sentence. I was having a hard time understanding it myself.
He laughed now.
“You got it right, lady. My very mean mother is the reason I’m like this. And strange as it may sound, I wouldn’t settle for a wife who couldn’t learn to be a mean mother either!” he said this with a smile and I saw him thumb away a drop of tear from the corner of his eye.
He was crying for the loss of his ermmm…mean mother?!
Who woulda thought?!!!

Absolutely Beautiful!
Lol! OK, this is major fiction from my own bejeweled pen. Ha-ha!
You already guessed, right?
Do excuse the weird title. I think I major in weird titles.
N.B – Not all the gentlemen in the world were bred by their mothers but mamas sure can help in breeding more gentlemen for us. I think being a gentleman even in this century can’t ever be overrated.
So right now, I’ll just assume (with hope) that you get what my point is and I’ll snap my pen close. I’m not going to waste my ink! :p
People, appreciate your mamaz. Ladies, value ’em gentlemen!

P.S. – Please, don’t keep your opinions to yourself. There are two comment boxes below! Thanks.

Today's Treasures in Tiny Packages.

Hello, dears! How have things been? I know that I'm not always punctual as I should be and I reeeaaalllyyy apologize. It's other commitments vying for my attention.

I don't know about you. I don't know from which perspective you see things and situations but I like to look at them from every way; through different spyglasses.

So I was pondering today (as I seem to do all the time! :) )

THANKS!: Broken Heart Mended Already 2

WATCH OUT: frozen heart!

(Forgive the length please. I want to start a new topic next week. That's why it's quite long!)

Yeah, hon. No tips on how to avoid a broken heart.
Anyone who tells you that they have a magical tip on how to keep your heart from being untainted or broken is...well, not being real.

OK! Here’s one way to avoid a broken heart. It’s the only one I can think of right now. Pray, if you have another one, tell me about it.

HELP!: Broken Heart Needs Mending ASAP 1

DespairLand...
She felt like her heart was being ripped apart. She gasped painfully through her tears and used the back of her hand to wipe her tears.

Her nose ran into her mouth but she didn't care at all. What was a runny nose compared to a broken heart from the man you felt so sure was your future? Your sun, moon, star...your universe?

Nothing, she answered herself.

She recalled the good old days when romance had been the order of her day.
He had been soooo romantic. The type that would brush a strand of hair off your face so slowly and so tenderly, your heart would skip a beat "Thump!"
The type that just knew how to treat a lady right and oozed self-confidence.

Maybe that was why she had fallen so hard and so fast for him.
Boy, he was a smooth talker. She had stripped herself bare for him: body and soul.

He had enjoyed the best of the goods and left her, bare and broken.

Whoever coined the term "Love Sucks" deserved a straight high-five. She was beginning to seriously consider the other part of the hilarious coinage "Try chocolate" even though she was on a non-fat diet.

"Love sucks. Try chocolate"
Chocolate had helped her friend, right?

She had found love and she was DONE with it. Amen.

Just then, another beautiful memory of the good ol' days was about to pierce through her thoughts and she firmly reached out, mentally, shut the door on it and jammed the lock home.
No more thoughts of him. No more sweet memories to torture herself with. She was putting an end to all that, and she was doing that NOW! No more sleepless nights too, like the one she'd just had.
She looked at her bedside clock.

5:00 am.

She might as well make good on her new resolutions and go for her morning run now.
So she stepped into her shorts, light tee and running sneakers. She paused for her iPod and earpiece before heading for her usual route.

One dude who happened to be out too came up jogging beside her and tried to start a conversation but she stared straight ahead and quickened her pace. Forget that she had caught a brief side-glimpse of his face and he was very cute.

Well she was IMMUNE!
She was determined to be anyway.

The male species plain irritated her right now and she didn't think she was ever going to fall in love again.

Ever.

Countless ladies and guys reading this will be able to easily relate to this.

The issue of heartbreaks is more than rampant in today's society, and it isn't going to stop. It is one of those things that must happen just because!

I can see you shaking your head and doing the whole 'Tufia' thingy.
Fine! I'm also doing it! We all want our hearts to remain in one piece; unbroken (at least those of us whose hearts haven't been broken yet anyway).
Sweetheart, a broken heart isn't something anyone wants to deal with, I tell you.

However, it doesn't kill.
And that, my dear, is the point!

I'm not going to tell you that I have tips on how to avoid a broken heart *sad face*

MY FANTASY BREATHES…AND REALITY KNOCKS #OH DEAR (PART I)

So her Mama told her to go to the grocery store for some fresh veggies – Spinach – to be exact.
On her way to the store, she happened on a movie shoot but she didn’t halt her footsteps, just kept going, not wanting to dally. But just as she made to cross the road to give way to people passing, she heard a name pass through somebody’s lips…the name of her all time movie idol crush!
Unbelievable!
She halted in her tracks and slowed her steps. However, when she heard someone yell that same name, she couldn’t resist. She just had to be sure…so she turned her head towards the place where the crew was gathered and her eyes zoomed in on the face she never thought in her wildest fantasies she would see, much less in her little nondescript western county hometown.
Her eyes bugged…big time; until she was pretty sure they had become identical to her Mama’s biggest saucers; and before she knew what she was doing, her feet found themselves, involuntarily, heading towards the place where the crew were gathered, working hastily as if they had a deadline to meet.
She pushed her way through the now thickening crowd of spectators and made it to the front, at the railings which must have been placed there by the crew security to prevent fanatics like her from shoving their pens in the actors’ faces, pleading for autographs.
She must be dreaming or something…it seemed beyond real. She stared at her crush until her eyes nearly blurred, blinked and kept on staring. By now, people were already yelling and pushing so hard against the railings, it was a miracle it didn’t tip over.
Image
When she saw her movie star idol, she went…
She didn’t even breathe, she just stared.  Some minutes later, when there was a pause in the shoot, her crush – heaven bless him – turned around and acknowledged the crowd with a nice and wide grin, causing them to nearly have a fit with how they were yelling at the very top of their excited lungs.
Then she seemed to wake up out of her trance when he waved at them.
Scratch that, he waved at her…it was her he was definitely waving at!
By now, some ladies, both young and old – the old ladies were not about to be outdone! – were already yanking their tops up and stretching their arms out for autographs, begging for kisses anywhere he cared to place them.
Awww…don lemme die ‘ere, megastar. Take pity on an ol’ lady!
Swie boy, gimme a kiss!
Ah bein’ dyin’ for ya for as long as ah kin remember baby, come on over ‘ere!
All manners of catcalls were being yelled at the icon.
Before she knew it, she too was screaming; joining in the uproar,
Oh sweetie, don leave me like this…take mercy on a country gal an’ come over ‘ere, man! she yelled
She stretched her arms until she fairly upended herself over the railing, only avoiding a broken neck because of a person behind her who happened to be latching on to her tank top.
She then pouted her lips, kiss-fashion and beckoned daringly to her fantasy to come on over. And though she had made the gesture, she didn’t for once imagine that he would even look her way again. It was for this reason that she became utterly shell-shocked when he proceeded to saunter arrogantly towards the railings…no, scratch that again – towards her.
He was coming towards her!
It was a surprise she hadn’t swooned yet.

MY FANTASY BREATHES…AND REALITY KNOCKS #OH DEAR (Part II)

Then he stopped in front of her and smiled down into her face; that famous megawatt lopsided grin that the cameras were quite familiar with!
He stopped in front of her and reached up and touched her cheek…her cheek!!! Oh heck…she must be a puddle on the tarred floor already, and if she wasn’t, she must be made of stronger stuff than she thought. She was never going to wash that cheek. Period.
She gripped the railings tightly and tried to get a grip on herself; gather her scattered wits.
He said something to her and she had to crane her neck to hear him better; then she broke into a smile so wide, a Cheshire cat would have been proud of her.
But that wasn’t all. The final sweet straw came when he drew her into his embrace…embrace, not hug!
She latched on like a leech and enjoyed it for a total of three seconds so that when he released her she was momentarily stunned; to say the least.
Her friends would nearly die of jealousy…wait till they hear!
When he made to move on to the next crazy fan, she pulled on his arm,
No, Please wait a sec…autograph, pleeease!
Then she rudely yanked the marker out of the hand of the mooning elderly lady next to her and shoved it into his palm, before pulling her shirt up halfway for him to sign on her belly. If she’d told him to sign on her arm, her Mama would see it and she’d definitely get grounded…eternally.
She could only hope none of her Mama’s friends were here, else her Mama’d surely hear about it and  would give her butt such a tanning, she wouldn’t soon forget it.
She prayed fervently that the marker was permanent. That’ll be the closest she would ever come to having a tattoo with the sort of mama she had. Not that her Mama would be seeing her belly anyway. Crop tops were banned in her unconventional home.
She sighed when he finished signing and shot her a smile before leaving.
She couldn’t believe her wonderful stroke of good fortune.
The sun seemed to shine brighter than ever and she felt slightly light-headed.
Then she turned around, albeit mournfully and fought her way out of the now-thickened crowd.
As soon as she was able to breathe in fresh gulps of air, she tried to remember where she had been headed before the wonderful, wonderful occurrence which just happened.
Then it hit her like a freight train.
Wait…Mama! The store…oh dear, and Mama was having some important guests over this evening. Her mind was as blank as…as whatever.
She couldn’t recall what she was supposed to go get…some veggies or something…of course, she was dead.
Nothing good ever came to her that easy! Cozying up to her old time idol crush meant sacrificing her neck on her Mama’s good ol’ choppin’ block.
A nice butt-tanning awaits you your majesty, she told herself wryly.
So what was she going to do at the store? Mope and admire the wooden shelves and moon at the shiny containers?
Someone’s in major trouble
She trudged up the hill towards the store…purposeless.

*clears throat loudly*
Errmm…sorry to jack you out of fun land…
…so that is the end of my story…don’t hate on me, ehn?
OK, I know it is nothing much but, hey! I tried, right?
I’m a writer and we writers tend to get carried away with our stories at times. Can’t blame us. It’s in the writing gene…or maybe in our brain. Ask us for a page and you’ll get an epic novel! Editors, get to work!
The only way to remove this writers’ trait may be through a major brain surgery but I will have to beg off…I happen to like this trait too much so, NO SURGERIES PLEASE, THANKS!
Back to the point.
I wrote that short story for you just so you could get a point…the very last word in the story: Purposeless.
The whole story was meant to make you understand the main theme of this post.
Now, this is not one of my major posts, but then again, it may be the most major of them all.
Whatever you are doing, please can you drop it for a minute? Except for reading this page of course.
Pause and take a deep breath in…then out. Thanks.
Please, work with me. *Self-examination mode activated*
Now look at what you are doing … (you are reading this page) and ask yourself if it is serving you any purpose. Ask yourself if it is worth your while…ask yourself if that is what you ought to be doing at the moment. Thus far, besides enjoying yourself (which I’m sure you are *winks*), is this serving any purpose?
Image
Your Purpose: A Useful Life!
Now, that done please look around you and survey the friends around you. Are they the people you want to be surrounded by? Are they the friends that drive you to want to become a better person or do they plain drive you to crazy distraction?
Besides the whole “Birds of a feather flock together” thingy, are they real friends who are worth your while or are they people you could as well do without since they serve no meaningful purpose?
I’m not going to say you shouldn’t have fun…after all, that is the spice of life, but then if you overdo it, you just might end up becoming a joker.
Do you constantly find yourself asking yourself why you are doing what you are doing and questioning everything? If that is the case you may need to re-strategize. Take a step back and look at your life as if it belonged to someone else and ask yourself if you are making an impact on your world.
We all are on a race track called ‘Life’ and I don’t know about you, but I am not about to rest on my oars and let life travel by without me while I just trudge forward, dragging my feet in the soil. Here’s what I intend to do: March forward with purpose, ensuring that I leave note-worthy and visible exemplary foot-prints in the sands of time.  - Subulola Jiboye

MY FANTASY BREATHES…AND REALITY KNOCKS #OH DEAR (Part III)

It is important that you stand on a sure ground…a ground that is paved with positive possibilities, not the uncertainty of questions of ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’.
Image
We are all writers in this world…Write a wonderful story of Purpose for yourself. – Subulola Jiboye
Ask yourself the questions that are important now so that you will be sure, prepared and well equipped when the time comes for you to make those important life-changing decisions.
The seemingly unimportant questions you ask yourself today and choose to answer appropriately are the tiny footsteps that will lead you to fulfilling purpose the way you were purposed to.
If you are not careful to fulfill the little purposes in your life such as working at the right time, sleeping, talking, eating, giving, thinking, playing and praying at the right time, how then do you expect to get to get to that point of utter, absolute and soul-lifting fulfillment?
Spontaneity and spur of the moment decisions is all good and sweet but each individual has the sole responsibility of deciding whether or not s/he wants to live his/her life not having done anything to benefit those around him/her; not having affected their world.
Face it friend, you’re not gonna live forever on this earth, and neither am I. Therefore, you need to ensure that whatever you are doing and the people you spend your time with is/are worth every second of your while.
A little survey towards a beneficial end never hurt anyone, I tell you! ♥
Check this out…a poem I wrote for the purpose of this post. It is simple, though deep.

Purpose = Beauty

You are an artist, dear
You are a writer
You are a builder
You are a traveler
You are a student

An artist draws
He creates
He modifies
He paints pictures
He creates and enhances beauty

A writer travels
Into the world of imagination
He explores places and contemplates
Also, he weaves intricately
Stories and beauty into plain useless material

A builder builds
He heightens
He toils for gain
Block by block
His work grows

A traveler soars
Into realms unchattered
Mind-wise; Flesh-wise
In imagination, he explores
And basks in beauty

A student learns
He sits to take in
He knows it’s for tomorrow
He doesn't complain ’cause he knows
That in tomorrow’s beauty, he'll surely bask

Now, are you an artist?
Are you a writer?
Are you a builder?
Are you a student?
Are you a traveler?
Or…I hate to ask,
Are you perhaps, nobody?

Dear, Your purpose is your beauty.
